Five Ways to Get Lost

We can find examples of movements needing adjustment to God’s way of thinking (repentance) in the charismatic and Jesus movements of the ’60s and ’70s. Because I am a product of these, and would be considered a charismatic by many, I can “pick on us” without my comments being of a critical nature. Also, having been a participant, I know them better than I do other movements or organizations.

In the next two chapters, I will discuss five failures which I believe short-circuited these moves of God, causing them to fall short of all He wanted to accomplish through them. Though applied to these two movements in particular, they are common mistakes and therefore valid for all. My purpose in rehashing these errors is to help us preserve this next wave of revival and keep it from getting off course.

I do not mean to imply these movements were total failures; though this is a critique of sorts, it is not meant to be critical. God did accomplish much through these particular flows of the river. Through them, thousands were saved and filled with the Holy Spirit; the Jesus movement impacted a very hopeless generation; the teaching office of Ephesians 4:11 was restored to the Church; worship matured immensely; and other blessings were released as well. As mentioned, I personally was touched in a major way and am, to one degree or another, a product of these particular renewals.

In spite of the blessings, however, the five weaknesses I want to discuss were very serious. Of course, there may have been more, but these stand out to me. (Incidentally, I’m giving them to you alliteratively, which those of you schooled in the finer points of preaching know increases the anointing level significantly. Hallelujah for honed, heavenly homiletics!)
